Now in Our 56th Year!

Breaking Barriers for Creative Private Investment -VS- Government Programming

SMHA worked on local, regional, state and national levels to fight the huge and powerful plantation system. SMHA was striving to help the workers become “empowered persons.”

SMHA Created Teche Action Clinic, 1st medical and dental clinic for sugar-cane farmworker families. It became a model for what is now a system of 52 clinics across the state of Louisiana and operate independent of SMHA.

SMHA broke many barriers and created Iberia Parish's 1st and only Traditional Neighborhood Development for people of all ages and ethnicities to enjoy a walkable, safe community.

SMHA Supports all aspects of Rural Recovery and Development, investing in comunities that have had long term disinvestment in communities of color, disasters, and small business investments. 1,064 homes, businesses & churches recovered.
