New Iberia, Louisiana – Gloria Steinem, a long time supporter of Southern Mutual Help Association, visited SMHA’s office and staff and met with local farmer, Jackie Judice, at Northside Planting.  This is Gloria’s 5th visit to SMHA over a 35 year period.

On this day in 2015: During one of many visits to SMHA, Gloria Steinem visited sugarcane farmers to see how mechanization and overseas competition in the sugar industry had impacted the sugar business in Louisiana. Lorna Bourg and Gabe Schwartzman from SMHA, together with Gloria, visited Jackie Judice, owner of Northside Planting LLC and long time partner of SMHA in promoting more sustainable agricultural practices to the sugarcane industry. Gloria hitched a ride in the Northside Planting cane cutter, along with Haden, an employee.

Gloria met with Jackie and his family, who carry on the business.
She was very excited to sit atop the harvester and take it for a ride to get hands on experience!
