Gabe Schwartzman
Life Quality Initiatives Director
SMHA

Gabe Schwartzman will work closely with Sister Helen Vinton to lead the Life Quality Initiatives at SMHA. In his position he will work to increase the quality of life for fishers and farmers across coastal Louisiana.

Originally from the Washington, DC, area, Gabe has become a passionate advocate for rural communities. Most recently, he came to SMHA after spending a year on a Gardner Fellowship with USDA Rural Development. Before that he had worked as researcher and advocate in southern West Virginia, spending time with the Appalachian South Folklife Center. Gabe earned a bachelors degree in Geography, with a focus on culture and economy, from UC Berkeley in 2013. During that time he received several research grants and awards to study Appalachian political and economic questions. Throughout his college career and before, Gabe spend time in the mountains of West Virginia, where he began his learning about the complex and unique problems facing rural communities. He is also an occasional contributing writer to the Daily Yonder.
