Actor James Lee Burke with some of Southern Mutual Help Association, Inc.'s staff
The locally-filmed movie, "In the Electric Mist", based on New Iberia native James Lee Burke's novel "In the Electric Mist of the Confederate Dead", held its premier on February 18, 2009 at the Grand Theatre in New Iberia. Following the screening was a reception for the general public at the Gougenheim Banquet Hall, attended by producers, writers, and actors of the film. The Gougenheim reception was made possible by these associations and individuals: Clementine Dining & Spirits, The Gougenheim, The Daily Iberian, Iberia Parish Convention and Visitors Bureau, Mayor Hilda Daigre Curry, Berard Transportation, Inc., and Gordon Doerle. Tickets to the event were available to the general public for $35 apiece, with all proceeds benefitting Southern Mutual Help Association. SMHA has enjoyed a long-standing relationship with Burke, both sharing a common interest in the establishment of strong local communities.
